The Salty Dog

Growing up, The Salty Dog was a place we would eat at during our family trips to Hilton Head. It was my favorite t-shirt (pink, of course), and it represents some of my favorite memories, like the time my sisters fought over who was going to drive to wherever they were wanting to go. When Allye asked who was going to drive, Abby responded calmly with, “Well you’re the oldest, so you should probably drive.” I remember thinking how valid of a point that was, but Allye did not think the same. She fired back, “That’s not a thing, why don’t you just drive?” Abby was very adamant that this was a thing, and had a very good supporting argument, “It’s a rule—why do you think Dad always drives us around?”

Coolest part of having sisters? They're automatically your friends, too! 1. Striped bikini: Anthropologie

Long story short, this argument went on for way too long, and the great debater, also know as Abby, is now a lawyer—shocker!

We’ve done a lot of reminiscing while we’ve been at the beach this week. Our parents reminded us of all the nights we would spend at the “teen club” here in Hilton Head. When I think back, I’m not even certain I was officially a “teen,” but the good news about teen clubs is that they don’t check IDs, so I made it in!

I also recall eating an endless amount of homemade chicken and cheese quesadillas that Mom would make—they were my favorite. And becoming best friends with the beach shuttle driver to the point where he was basically my own private vehicle service.

Now that we’re all a bit older and we’ve outgrown the teen club and the silly yet entertaining fights, The Salty Dog has taken on a new meaning—it’s now one of my go-to drink recipes when at the beach!
Salty Dog Cocktail recipe complimentary of Team Littrell Allen Tate Realtors!
They'll get you moving...and will most likely treat you to a refreshing cocktail, too!

It’s a fairly basic recipe, and some of you may know it as a different name, or really just no name at all, but for now it’s your Salty Dog! It just so happened to be one of the recipes featured in this month’s issue of American Lifestyle magazine—the same issue that Mom and Mark are sponsors of this time around!

One of the best parts about vacation is the fact that happy hour pretty much comes anytime you want it to. On Monday, happy hour came around 3 o’clock for Mom and I, so we hopped up to her and Mark’s kitchen, where you would find the quality alcohol. Your typical Salty Dog consists of red grapefruit juice, your vodka of choice, a grapefruit slice for garnish, and salt for the rim of your glass.

Mom and I created our own version of this drink, but still very similar! Fact about Mom: she doesn’t always love the taste of plain water, so she looks to other not so plain options to hydrate her day-to-day. Here go-to zero calorie drink of choice these days are Sparking ICE waters in Pink Grapefruit flavor. So we mixed these with our vodka and essentially made a skinny cocktail.
Meanwhile, Mark is entertaining himself around us with a conversation that sounds like it has to do with dinner plans, but unfortunately for him, Mom and I’s full attention was dedicated to our happy hour drinks. Mark starts making his way to the front door, I turn to Mom and ask, “So, what’s
he doing?” Mark responds for her and says, “Well he’s right here, so you could probably just ask him.” This sentence is one he has to state very often as the women in my family have a problem with talking about our men in third person even when they are in the room with us. I guess I am no exception!

Anywho, I digress, back to happy hour!

We did some taste testing of our concoctions as we kept asking the other, “Can you taste the vodka?” Well we couldn’t, which was a little concerning because Mom definitely had a heavy hand when she was pouring! Typically, our rule of thumb is if you can’t taste it, then there’s not enough! We don’t recommend this rule in all situations, but it’s most certainly always appropriate to follow on vacation!

1. "Mornings are for Mimosas" tee originally from Target, but similar version can be found here: Mornings are for Mimosas 2. Lilly Pulitzer Shorts 3. Diff Eyewear Sunglasses 4. North Carolina Chain Necklace is from my favorite local Monogram Shop, Miller Monograms!
As we were on our way to one of our family meals in Sea Pines, we noticed THE rule was being broken! I, the youngest, just so happened to be driving this time around with Abby in the front seat with me to prevent her from getting car sick--I'm still debating whether or not I believe this is an actual thing or just a way for her to get to sit up front! Regardless, we got a good chuckle once we realized we were being rule breakers.

Over our last couple of days here, I'm looking forward to breaking more rules with these peeps, and making even more memories that I'm sure we'll all cherish for years to come!

The REAL Salty Dog cocktail!
Meet the smallest member of our Salty Dog crew, Mr. Franklin!

Y'all, being an aunt especially to this guy is the most fun! Never a dull moment!

I'd just eat him on a cracker if I wasn't trying to go carb-free! :)

She Said "Yes" (To The Cookies)!

Follow my blog with Bloglovin
Over and over again, 36 times over to be exact, I rolled out the dough, cut the shapes, popped them in the oven, iced, sprinkled a little bit of love of my own in them, and decorated each sweet cookie by hand. What I noticed throughout the process was that these cookies, although they were shaped by the same cookie cutter and iced with the same colors and monogram, there was still something different about each one—each had a little something that made it stand apart from the rest of the batch. It’s a lot like love, in my opinion. Love, in general, is its own whole thing, but just like these monogrammed cookies, you will never see or experience the exact same love twice, and there’s just something so special about that!

I was so tickled to be able to use my new Crosley Stainless Steel Top Kitchen Island that I didn't even care about the mess I was making!

This icing and I had that a tough love kind of relationship...I'm sure it wasn't user error on my part or anything! :)

I know I’m still fairly young in the grand scheme of life, but I’ve seen a great deal in my ripe old age of 25, and as a result I’ve learned how many kinds of love there are to endure: the kind that’s patient and kind enough to last over 50 or more years; the kind that is so darn passionate, yet sadly destructive; the kind of love that you fall out of; the kind that has you falling deeper every day; the kind of love that gives you butterflies in  your belly every time you look at each other; the laugh until you pee your pants kind of love; the second chance kind of love; the later in life kind of love; the kind of love that saves your life; the Rayna Jaymes and Deacon Claybourne kind of love…okay sorry, I’m binge-watching Nashville as I type this!

Once I had the border on each cookie, the filling of the middle was easy peasy! Toothpicks came in super handy and helped to evenly spread the icing out.

I could keep rattling these off like I can rattle off cookie flavors that I’ve eaten, but we’d never make it to the end of this blog post if I did that.

For those that know me personally, you’re probably thinking how ironic this is considering I’m single as all get out these days! But what’s funny about being single—well, there’s actually lots of funny things: the awkward first dates, the unfortunate dating app profiles, my family members asking if I’m seeing anyone special to which I respond “Y’all are on a need-to-know basis and right now there’s no one for you to know!” Anywho, I digress! What’s really funny is how much I’ve soaked up from the loving relationships I’m constantly surrounded by. I’m certainly blessed to have such amazing, yet super different, loves around!

The past several weeks, I’ve gotten to celebrate some of these loves at dear friends’ weddings and showers from Greensboro all the way to Texas. I also had the amazing opportunity to cater the dessert at the rehearsal dinner for an amazing couple I’ve had the absolute pleasure of recently becoming friends with. They have that best friend kind of love that I hope to one day find!

When Abbey and I first met in middle school I thought she was the biggest nerd...but she quickly became my best friend and I'm so happy our friendship continued throughout college and life thereafter! Her and her now hubby, Malcolm, gave me just the loveliest reason to visit Austin, TX. Their gorgeous wedding was held at Prospect House in Dripping Springs.

Also, how perfect was their cake?! Literally had my eyes on it the entire night...at least when I wasn't cutting a rug on the dance floor! Girl likes her cake y'all.
Got to spend the day with these peeps a few weeks ago at Nikki's shower! Never a dull moment with my college girls. It never matters how long we have gone without seeing each other--it's always so easy to pick right up where we left off!
1. Floral Off-The-Shoulder Dress (this dress is actually last season, but J.Crew always has similar options that are the cutest) 2. Gold and Crystal Link Bracelet 3. Gold Link Bracelet 4. Everybody's Favorite Hoop Earrings

The Junior League of Greensboro brought the four of us together almost 3 years ago and for that I am so thankful! How beautiful is Holly?! She was so excited to share with everyone the fact that her wedding dress had pockets--a girl after my own heart! Her wedding was held at Suite 300 here in Greensboro, and was absolutely perfect!
1. Black Jumper (on sale at The Loft right now!) 2. Beaded Scarf Necklace (this style is sold out, but the rest of her collection is amazing)

At a small shower for Soph, the hilarious bride-to-be, I brought some sugar cookie favors in the shape of wedding dresses for everyone. As soon as she saw them, she asked, “Wait, will you do my rehearsal dinner?” I immediately laughed thinking surely, she was joking. Turns out she couldn’t have been more serious! So later that evening, I hoped on Pinterest to find the exact image I had already pictured in my head, which is kind of like Pinterest in itself—an organized mess. She shared her wedding colors so I could coordinate icing shades and we chose the style monogram. I did not trust myself enough to just wing this thing so a couple trial runs later I sent a couple photos to the future Mrs. Parker for approval—luckily for me, she said yes (to the cookies)!

How stinkin' cute are these!? Definitely one of my all-time favorites to make.

The morning of the dinner, I woke up, put on my favorite work-in-the-kitchen music (“My Girl” Pandora station), and began bagging and tagging each one-of-a-kind monogrammed cookie. Dressed them in ribbon as the finishing touches, buckled them up in the car as if they were small children, and toted them to where they’d be served that evening, The Traveled Farmer. And just like that, I said goodbye to 36 of the sweetest loves I’ve ever gotten to be a part of.

Even though it was a modified menu just for the rehearsal dinner party, I loved seeing my name on it! Soph was too sweet to make me seem so official. :)

If you live in Greensboro or are ever in town, then definitely try The Traveled Farmer! Their farm-to-table concept and little side market shop are what make them a unique addition to the area!
So many thanks to Soph and Ben for letting me play a small role in their wedding weekend!

If you'd like similar cookies for your own event (or just for a personal tasting), then let me know--203YP would be happy to whip up a batch or few for you!

When Carl's Gluten Free, We're All Gluten Free

This past week was just one of those weeks where I thought to myself, “There are just not enough hours in a day to do all the things I need and want to!” I had so much going on—all good things—and yesterday I finally got to sit still in the sunshine for a minute and reflect on it all.

If you asked me to describe the week in a nutshell, then I would call it the week of “firsts” - first time experimenting with gluten-free-ness, first time putting a piece of furniture together all by my lonesome, and first time catering the dessert for an event!

Let’s start with the gluten-free cake. My best friend Carlee (who you will see me refer to as Carl more often than not) went gluten-free a while back, which also means whenever we’re together I, too, am gluten-free. And honestly, I don’t mind it! I’ve actually enjoyed most, if not all, the gluten-free foods I’ve come across including, GF desserts like GF cookies (sometimes just the dough), GF brownies, etc.

If you couldn’t have guessed, I like to be in charge of desserts for get-togethers! I knew that for Carl's birthday anything I made would have to be gluten-free. Well, challenge accepted! I first asked her what she wanted for dessert, and her response was “anything dark chocolate.” Yum.

So, I did my research on what exactly gluten-free meant because I pretty much had always told myself it was mostly just a no carb thing. I’ll go ahead and spare y’all my findings—I feel fairly certain you can find a better explanation elsewhere. Anywho, I digress! Naturally, me doing research included a whole lot of Pinterest-ing, which I was a bit surprised as to how little I found for dark chocolate gluten-free cakes. Most of the recipes I did come across called for either a xatham gum or guar gum, which is basically a thickener for sauces, gravies, and I guess gluten-free stuff. I had no problem buying this, so I put it on my grocery list along with the other ingredients and headed to the store. Well, let me tell you what! Xantham gum is no friend of mine after looking at that price tag! For the little amount my recipe called for, there was no way in heaven I was buying that, and I felt confident my recipe could do without. Spoiler alert: I was right—didn’t need it!
I know sour cream sounds like a weird ingredient to add, but you'd be surprised as to how many different recipes call for it--it's kinda like a not-so-secret secret weapon in the baking/sweets world! :)

Now, I will be the first to admit that I love the batter of pretty much any dessert just as much if not more as the next person, so I was looking forward to trying the batter for this recipe. So when all my ingredients were all combined in my Kitchenaid I spooned my little sample. I was certainly intrigued, for lack of a better word, by what I had just tasted…

I also had a mini panic attack, but it’s fine! Y’all, gluten-free cake batter IS NOT as good as regular batter, so don’t be fooled. When telling Carl of my batter experience, she confirmed this, too.

Well it was pretty much smooth sailing from there on, and for my gluten-free stuff lovers and/or needers, I hope you will consider trying this recipe yourselves! The finished product tasted a whole lot better than the batter, and I have lots of peeps who can attest to this. My friends thought it was so good that they began to question whether or not it was actually gluten-free…I pinky promise that it was!
Y'all. How precious is this cake closet?! It was used to cool cakes wayyyyy back when. My grandpa recently moved and him and my mom found this when packing everything up!
I just can't get enough it!

So, cheers to you Carl, my GF gf, whose friendship I appreciate more and more the older we get!

…I also appreciate your boyfriend Kevin, who has embraced the fact that we are a packaged deal!
Thanks for being my person for the past 17 years...holy heck that's a long time! We're old peep!
Sorry Kev...no room for ya in this pic :)
Eating GF is definitely not the first time Carl and the rest of my friends have played a part in me trying something new. They love yoga, so I figured I'd try it out--turns out "child's pose" and I get along great! And sometimes there's beer after.

Keep scrolling for the entire recipe! If you are ready for the next “first,” then click HERE to read about my surprisingly not disastrous attempt at putting together my Crosley kitchen Island!
The icing-to-cake ratio was perfect, if I do say so myself! Not too much, not too little, just right!
